What is the significance of Lumbini?

Lumbini is one of the holiest places in the world for Buddhists as it is the birthplace of Siddhartha Gautama, who became Lord Buddha, in 623 BCE. The Mayadevi Temple marks the exact spot where Queen Mayadevi gave birth. Emperor Ashoka visited in 249 BCE and erected a pillar commemorating the site.
